Yates Norton

In Residence
Yates Norton

Artist residencies at SRM give artists free studio space and time to develop musical and artistic projects.

We welcomed Yates Norton as a resident at the studio. A curator, writer and artist, Yates works across contemporary art, performance, research, music and public programming. He is currently Curatorial Advisor to Knotenpunkt, working with founder Isabelle Nowak on programme development and interdisciplinary initiatives, and is also advising the new arts foundation, just a moment (jam), launching in 2026.

Previously, Yates was a curator at the Roberts Institute of Art, where he worked across residencies, commissions, and public programmes, including commissioning performances, such as a new opera by Rachel Jones and the Turner Prize-nominated performance by Simeon Barclay. Prior to this, he was curator at Rupert in Vilnius, working across exhibitions, residencies, and public programmes. His writing has appeared in publications including Phaidon, The Chicago Review, and Chisenhale Books, and he has collaborated with artists in a range of contexts, including singing in the Golden Lion-winning opera Sun & Sea.

During his time at Studio Richter Mahr, Yates used the space to continue writing his first novel, which traces the complex inner life of a young working class man as he negotiates violence, prison, desire and class. He also made use of the piano and recording studio to develop material for a future music composition.
