Last year James visited the studio to work on his debut album, Dreamcatcher – an intimate sequence of contemporary classical music centred around the act of imagining. James recorded the piano segments of his debut album on the studio’s Steinway D.
Dreamcatcher offers a compelling reflection of James’s artistry, bridging core organ repertoire with contemporary works written for him by leading composers, alongside collaborations in electronic and experimental music. It brings together a collection of contemporary classical works by composers including Nico Muhly, Meredith Monk, Laurie Spiegel, Gabriella Smith, and Marcos Balter.
The organ of St Albans Cathedral features prominently, with James performing Giles Swayne’s Riff-raff, the first recording of the piece made on the instrument for which it was written. Dreamcatcher reflects McVinnie’s unique artistic voice, blending his deep roots in organ repertoire with a bold exploration of new music.
