Héloïse Werner and Emma Werner

Artist residencies at SRM give artists free studio space and time to develop musical and artistic projects.

We welcomed Héloïse Werner and Emma Werner as residents at the studio. Soprano and composer Héloïse Werner is currently an Associate Artist at Wigmore Hall and has been described by The Times as “quickly becoming a latter-day Cathy Berberian or Meredith Monk”. She is a recipient of the Prix Nadia et Lili Boulanger 2025 from the Académie des Beaux Arts and the PRSF Composers’ Fund 2025. Emma Werner is a writer, filmmaker, and multimedia producer. She also holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Cambridge.

Together, they create works that explore ways of communicating science and human behaviour through music and performance. Their recent collaborations include Les Leçons du Mardi (Wigmore Hall), M87 (BBC Radio 3’s 25 for 25 Sounds of the Century), Declared Extinct (Ars Nova Copenhagen), and close-ups (Festival Présences).

During their time at Studio Richter Mahr, Héloïse and Emma developed a new iteration of their piece close-ups as an interactive audiovisual installation. This new work portrays characters across multiple screens through wordless vocal exploration and physical performance, and is intended for presentation in galleries, art festivals or public performance spaces.
